This past week I took a deep dive into the world of graphic novels. My son, Michael, and I traveled to Los Angeles - after my motivational presentation in Long Beach – to join forces with my graphic novel co-creator, Adam Slutsky, to interview several publishers.
We questioned, listened, and learned the intricacies of the comic universe under the roof of the William Morris Agency in Beverly Hills. Let me tell you that it’s light years different than the conventional publishing world.
My agents paraded in several graphic publishers for us to interview. They all loved our concept called No Quarter. You can guess what topic we write about. But unlike Pirate Soul or My Pop-Pop is a Pirate, this pirate-themed novel begins in the form of a very graphic comic book (floppy) with a complex storyline that continues on a monthly basis for an entire year prior to being bound as a paperback or for a couple of years before transforming into a bookstore hardback.
And if you think comic books and graphic novels are just for kids, think again. Not only are graphic novels rising in popularity for mature ages, but many of the feature films released on the silver screen are adapted from the colored pens of graphic authors – the super successful Superman and Batman franchises, and movies such as Men in Black, V for Vendetta, Sin City, Blade, The Road to Perdition, A History of Violence, and 300.
We are hoping to make our decision on a graphic publisher in short order so we can have No Quarter promoted at the New York Comic-Con annual fan convention in February. (Remember, a goal must have a timeline, or it’s only a wish.)
By the way, the term “No Quarter” was used by pirates when their prey refused to surrender at the sight of the Jolly Roger flying from the mainmast. It literally means that no mercy or clemency will be granted. So just imagine the graphic fun I’ll have in this world!

Good luck with this one, Pat. I’m working on something too that I would like to see as a comic or film. Its a bout a guy named Norman who hunts ghosts. It a cross between X-files and Indiana Jones, and its called Para-Norm!
