The excitement, passion, energy, and craziness was reminiscent of the numerous grand opening events we hosted at our Sports Physical Therapists facilities in the ‘80s, the outrageous promotional happenings (scaling bridges, capping cabbies) we staged during my Sixers reign in the late ‘90s, and the piratical parties and ribbon slashing ceremonies at the Rum Barrel and Pirate Soul Museum during the beginning of the new millennium.
The launch of Skinny Water in Philadelphia will be remembered with the best of them.
On the exact day that gas prices in Philadelphia hit a record high of $4.00/gallon, the creative team around Skinny staged our coming out party by offering free gas to the general public. That’s right! Since Skinny Water contains no calories, we offered gas at no cost!
For one hour starting precisely at noon, the large LukOil gas station located in center city Philadelphia presented motorists with all the gas their car could hold – and a free bottle of Skinny Water for every passenger in the car. Needless to say, helicopter views caught hundreds of cars lined up well in advance of my changing the gas dollar display from “4” to “0”. In fact, the first car in line had been waiting since 12:30am! I couldn’t believe the lady driver waited through the entire night for a tank of fuel. When I asked her what she did for a dozen hours. She replied that she read her Bible between naps.
I threw extra bottles of Skinny Water into her backseat!
Although the event – like all of my promotional endeavors – was choreographed to ensure a fun, participatory brand awareness, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for our number one driver and the many people I met who were so appreciative of the free gas. Most of the visitors didn’t give a damn about the free Skinny Water or the sexy Skinny girls or the party atmosphere or me personally pumping their gas; they were primarily psyched to have anyone pumping their gas – for free!
With that said, the noontime event was a blast! Every motorist exited the LukOil gas station with a full tank of gas, a full bottle of Skinny Water, and a sense of feeling fully important to us. Checkout below the Red Lasso and YouTube clips to get a genuine feeling that permeated the day.
