Plates are Spinning

I use the analogy of the plate spinner when focusing my attention on a variety of important ventures. You remember the plate spinner on the Ed Sullivan variety show who would start by placing one spinning plate on the tip of a vertical stationary rod, and then repeat the process until he had a dozen disks spinning at the same time. The performer never ever removed his total focus away from any one plate for fear of it wobbling and falling.

And that’s exactly my philosophy regarding all the plates I have spinning – even when other people’s fingers are on the plate. The following are updates on some of the PC plates.

Last week our agent at William Morris was supposed to screen Our Lady of Victory for the top film honchos at Fox Studios. Disney is scheduled on the 22nd. Unfortunately, one of Fox’s executives died on the operating table creating a less than perfect atmosphere to make decisions on buying an independent flick. So the meeting was cancelled and we’re awaiting word from Cassian for an alternate date and the opportunity to do his thing in the near future. (See blog: A Memorable Screening) He’s our designated plate spinner – but that doesn’t mean I don’t request weekly updates.

Speaking of movies, the outline for Blackbeard is in the hands of studio executives at DreamWorks. (See blog: Blackbeard Adventure Continues) We are scheduled to review notes this week; and hopefully, we will get the green light for David Franzoni to begin penning the script. I can’t wait for Franzoni’s mind to spin this yarn.

Waiting has been the operative word when it comes to our dealings with Time Warner Cable in relations to our Homes.TV venture. (See blog: Persistence Pays Off) But this past week saw the plate a little sturdier on the tip of the rod. My partners, Roger Scommegna and Kevin Malloy, and my son, Michael, joined me on a visit to the company’s headquarters in Stamford, Connecticut where we finally met eyeball-to-eyeball with the heads of programming - Melinda Witmer, Judi Allen, and Kristina Song. Following the viewing of our 3-minute sizzle tape and before we even shared our 8-slide business deck, the questions came fast and furious. Luckily, the boss lady, Melinda, is a real estate junkie and quickly saw the competitive advantage of our technology and vision. One powerful spin of the plate!

Michael Wayne at DecaTV provided us with positive news during our weekly update. Our Down to Business digital show (See blog: Down to Business) is generating interest from several powerful internet channels like Forbes.com, Businessweek.com, Bnet.com, and Portfolio.com. Our sizzle tape is engaging and entertaining and our producer Bill Soule recently edited four shows that demonstrate perfectly the scope of the show. You’re going to dig the content – and especially, the “Bullshit Meter!”

It’s confirmed that starting in September Slamball games (See blog: Let the Games Begin) will be aired on Versus with the Finals scheduled for November 2 on CBS. The post-production is underway with the games looking outrageous – high intensity, hard hitting, and definitely, high flying. We meet with MSG this week to investigate their interest in participating as one of the eight owner/operators for next season. Just think of John Starks – who successfully coached this season – coaching a Slamball team in NY. Those crazy Knicks/Gants/Rangers fans will go nuts!

Stay tune next week for my spinning the Skinny Water plate. Hint: skinny is spreading.

  1. Jessica Raumer Says:

    Hi Pat,

My husband David who just got back from the Sacramento Kings mini camp is interested in playing for the 76ers. I’m not sure if you have any summer leagues coming up or anything of that sort, but I’m hoping so.

Feel free to contact Geoff Petrie or Reggie Theus for references (I can’t put the phone # on here for obvious reasons, but I’m sure you have access.)

I look forward to hearing from you soon, Pat.

    Thank You, Jessica Raumer
