| The 5-2-1-Almost None is a cool little campaign developed by my friends at Nemours Health and Prevention Services to promote a healthier lifestyle for children and their families. It consists of four easy strategies for healthier eating and physical activity:
FIVE stands for five or more servings of fruits and vegetables per day. Try to serve at least one fruit or vegetable at every meal and snack time…the more the better.
TWO stands for no more than two hours of “screen time” per day which include TV, video games, and recreational computer time. Parents can be great role models by limiting your screen time as well.
ONE stands for at least one hour of physical activity time. Plan to play with your children every day whether it’s walking, dancing, swimming, gardening, jumping rope, or playing physical games as prime examples.
ALMOST NONE refers to almost no sugar-sweetened drinks no more than two servings per week of soft drinks, sports drinks, and fruit drinks that are not 100% fruit juice. Always attempt to serve water to your kids (and yourself) as well as milk and 100% fruit juice. So keep the sodas and sugary sports drinks out of the house!
Like brushing their teeth, the 5-2-1-Almost None program should be implemented in your children’s lifestyle at an early age. Make it fun. Make it routine. Make it a permanent. -- PC
